Geschiedenis van het archief
The Winnipeg Gallery and School of Art was incorporated by a special act of the Manitoba Legislature on April 27, 1923, thereby combining the gallery (organized in 1912 and known as the Winnipeg Museum of Fine Arts) and the Winnipeg School of Art (commencing operations in 1913). The Winnipeg Gallery and School of Art was intended to promote and cultivate the fine and applied arts and to provide art training to students and teachers. After a period of reduced operations in the mid-1920s, the gallery opened in the Civic Auditorium in 1932, under the recently formed the Winnipeg Art Gallery Association. The art school was in continuous operation under The Winnipeg Gallery and School of Art. It moved to Sherbrook Street in 1935 and three years later to a location on Kennedy Street. The school was made independent of the gallery in July of 1950, when it was made part of the University of Manitoba. Although the name The Winnipeg Gallery and School of Art continued to be in existence, the school was simply known as the Winnipeg School of Art. The gallery continued to operate under the Winnipeg Art Gallery Association until the incorporation of the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1963.
