Charles Comfort was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and moved to Winnipeg in 1912. He studied under Alex Musgrove at the Winnipeg School of Art. In 1939, while on staff at the University of Toronto, he was a cadet officer with the University Officers Training Corps. In 1943 he was appointed Senior Official War Artist. Once overseas, he was sent to England, Italy, Germany and northwestern Europe. In 1946 he returned to his job in the Department of Art and Archaeology at the University of Toronto. He then moved on as Associate Professor, Department of Art and Archaeology, University of Toronto from 1938-1960. In 1958 Mount Allison University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Laws and from 1960 to 1965 he was Director of the National Gallery of Canada. Following his retirement, Charles Comfort continued to paint. Charles Comfort passed away in 1994. (Source: War Graves Commission)

Fonds consists of two documents. The first is a transcript of a taped interview of Charles Comfort by Charles Hill dating from 1960. The second document consists of excerpts from Charles Comfort’s address as President of the Royal Academy of Arts at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 1973.
