The Inuit Tapirisat of Canada/Inuit Brotherhood (ITC) was founded in 1971 with the objective of creating an organisation run by Inuit and through which the Inuit would be represented. Aims of ITC included encouraging the development of Inuit leadership and facilitating communication among Inuit in the North, the promotion of Inuit language and culture and pride in Inuit heritage, and the promotion of public awareness of Inuit issues. The ITC is administered by a Board with representation drawn from all major Inuit groups. The first President was Tagak Curley who would go on to serve as Executive Director of the Inuit Cultural Institute.
